Armenian schools are known for their elaborate, cultural programs known as hantes. I have always loved watching them and appreciated the hard work that goes into curating them. It’s something all generations in a child’s family look forward to being the audience of throughout their primary schooling. The reference photo I used for this illustration is from Los angeles based, Vahan and Anoush Chamlian Armenian School’s famous Annual Cultural Day. I just love all the color variations and patterns in the costuming and of course the joy on the children’s faces as they hear the roar of applause from the audience at the end of each performance. It takes me back to my school days as well as stirring up the fond memories of watching my daughters’ hanteses.
